The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) warned the police not to use provisions of the Police Ordinance to violate fundamental rights ensured by the Constitution.

The HRCSL said trade unions and public movements have lodged a complaint with the Commission claiming that they have been informed to obtain permission from the police under the Police Ordinance to conduct the peaceful protest to be conducted today.

The HRCSL stressed the police that if any incident of fundamental right violation was reported, the country would have to face grave consequences.

They said a group of HRCSL officials would be deployed to observe the peaceful protest organized by the trade unions, public movements and political parties in Colombo today.
