The approval of the Cabinet has been granted to amend the Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance to suit the present and to draft the Theravada Monk Discourse Bill.

The Government presented this proposal and the Maha Sangha commented on the amendment of these 91-year-old Acts.

Chief Prelate of Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya, former lecturer of Rajarata Bhikshu University, Ven. Pothane Dhammananda Thera said:

The Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance needs to be changed and it should be amended to suit to the present requirements. We cannot comment because none of us know yet about the amendments to the Ordinance. The Buddhist priests should be consulted before the amendment. We must be made aware of the proposed amendments.

Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya Anuradhapura District Leader Ven. Gonagala Gnanaloka Thera of Sri Sugatha Maha Viharaya, Viharahalmillakulama said:

Before making any changes to the Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance, it is necessary to consult with the relevant Buddhist priests. Not a single Member of Parliament now knows about the religion of our country, although they are currently trying to amend the ordinance. All 225 MPs in Parliament are not adequately knowledgeable to amend such an important bill.

Therefore, it is necessary to ask the views of the Maha Sangha, including important scholars and monks, about the issues that must be considered when amending the Ordinance.
