President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayake is expected to hold talks with key Indian officials in New Delhi today, Daily Mirror learns. Mr. Ratnayake who is also the Senior Advisor to the President on National Security, was to leave for India yesterday evening at the invitation of Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra.

This is the first time Mr. Wickremesinghe’s envoy is undertaking a visit to India after he took office. India extended financial assistance amounting to US $ 3.8 billion in terms of currency swaps, deferment of payments and lines of credit to import essentials.

India is also planning for strategic economic investments in areas such as port, clean energy and petroleum. However, there is a pause in major cooperation on economic matters pending Sri Lanka rescheduling its debts as a condition for an agreement with the International Monetary FUND(IMF).

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan embassy in Beijing is reportedly seeking arrangements with the Chinese authorities for the President to visit China as early as possible.
