A National Council to coordinate all institutions providing services to children with special needs is necessary- State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle

Attending the ceremonial opening of a two-storied building in Puwakpitiya Jayaviru Sevana Institution, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control Sudarshini Fernandopulle highlighted the necessity to establish a National Council to coordinate all institutions providing services to children with special needs in Sri Lanka and the importance of developing a system that can register and regulate all such institutions.

Jayaviru Sevana is the only state-run institute that provides services to individuals with intellectual disabilities who have been deprived of care and protection of their parents. It is operated under the Department of Social Services.

The new two-storied building constructed in this institution has cost Rs. 54 million and has facilities for 50 residents. Currently, this care house provides shelter to a sum of 80 men between the ages of 14 and 65.

Yadamini Gunawardena, M.P., Former Provincial Councilor Sumith Zoysa, Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Jayantha Rohana, Secretary to the State Ministry Sunethra Gunawardena, Colombo District Secretary Pradeep Yasaratne and Social Services Director Chandana Ranaweera Arachchi were also present at the occasion.
