More than 3.4 million families out of the total of 5.7 families have requested for relief from the government due to the current economic crisis, State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said today. Speaking during the budget debate, he told Parliament that the families which had appealed for relief, would be provided with an allowance from April next year.

“Some 34,41,032 families out of 57,68,000 families have appealed for relief by October 20. That is 60% of the total families. We will shortlist and pick the eligible families by January next year and start handing out an allowance to eligible families from April next year,” he said.

Responding to claims that the government had not looked into the social welfare of the people, the Minister said Rs. 852 billion has been allocated for social welfare from the budget 2023, which is 10.8% from the state expenditure,” he said.

He said the government would continue to pay Rs. 7,500 for Samurdhi recipients and the disabled until this allownace is paid in April.
