Government Veterinary Surgeons Association warned that the price of eggs could increase above Rs.80 during the festive season. Addressing the annual conference of the association its President Dr. Sisira Piyasiri said the demand for eggs had declined due to the excessive price at present. However, he pointed out that the price of eggs could shot up in a higher percentage when the consumption goes up during the festive season.
“Increasing prices of food has affected food security which resulted in malnutrition. The worst affected are children and expectant mothers. The prices of food with animal protein are beyond the reach of the common man. The responsibility of the Department of Animal Production and Health has failed to meet the demand for animal protein. The relevant authorities only conduct talk shows on the issues affecting food security,” he said.
He further said the increasing electricity consumption charges, fuel price hike and the cost of labour had affected food security and that it would further aggravate in the times to come
